Earth Day Network is the global organizer of ‘Earth Day’ which is celebrated annually on 22nd April. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this day will implement a global digital mobilization to address urgent threats to people and the planet. This will mark the Golden Jubilee, 50th Anniversary of Earth Day on 22 April 2020, first started in 1970 in USA and now celebrated in more than 193 countries all over the world!
The goal of Earth Day is to unite hundreds of millions of people around the world to pressure world leaders to act on environmental degradation and climate change. The current Corona-virus disease (COVID-19) pandemic demonstrates that governments must embrace science early. With the exponential spread of the pandemic, it has been seen that many governments were too slow to respond to the outbreak and/or were indifferent about the science of this pandemic.
We must display utmost urgency of this global digital mobilization response to climate change on the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Earth Day to make it safe amid COVID-19 gloom. Cleaner air and water are two positives to emerge from this gloom, and we should not let the gains fritter away as normalcy returns!
Furthermore, a healthier public, cleaner environment, and greater consciousness of what constitutes good hygiene and sanitation are not only essential for our well-being, but they also translate into greater overall productivity and hence higher economic growth!
The novel corona-virus COVID-19 gloom will soon disappear with discovery of its vaccine by science and the concerned scientists getting Nobel Prize in Medicine for the same early next year! Till then let us strictly observe social distancing by staying safely at home as only safety saves and not any religious gatherings or its political exploitation of any kind!
The world's most eminent physicist/scientist Sir Albert Einstein, whom I hold in high esteem, also said that religion is an expression of human weakness, so COVID-19 will be defeated by science only and the Governments must, therefore, focus more on health sector, climate change and environment to save our planet Earth and thus all of us!
